Abstract: Traffic management in roads and motorways needs complex real-time systems which must adapt to the different traffic, weather and environmental conditions. That is the reason why the variable message signs (VMS) play a significant role in our cities and motorways, by providing a dynamic adaptation to different situations. Despite their great usefulness and versatility, in some occasions their installation can be a great challenge in places where the electricity grid does not reach. Besides, their high consumption could increase too much the cost of the system. This project consists in the design of the power electronics systems which provide energy to the VMS. The energy is also going to be used to light up the part of the road where the VMS is located. The main objective of the project is designing a system based on renewable energies, which can work without dependence of the electricity grid; but can take energy from the grid if the electricity sources of the system are not providing energy. For that purpose, solar panels and a batteries system will be installed. The system will also have a grid-tie inverter to provide energy from the grid to the system or the other way. Lastly, it will include drivers to provide energy to both the VMS and the LED lighting.
