Abstract: With this paper begins a series of works related to ETO roles on board of different types of vessels. This initiative comes from the Nautical School of Gijon (ESMC-Gijón) and it has been developed under the initiative Workroom on Nautical Applications (WNA). The ETO´s main role on this paper is to focus on the O&M tasks related with the equipment on board of an LNG carrier. WNA born with the idea to publicize the work of the ETO, often erroneously named in the ship as "the sparks" (Spanish: “El chispas”), due to the ignorance and underestimation of ETO work. The typical joke between the crew should not be anymore "the ETO serves only to change the lamps". This paper is to try and help with this. To valuate ETO profession a detailed list of tasks will be carefully explained along different WNA papers related with Power Electronics and general electronic equipment on different ships (LNG carrier in this case). In addition, the training and capabilities required to develop this function will be discussed in the work. Different Spanish universities have been evaluated to provide ETO capabilities and also academic degrees have been analyzed.  An English-Spanish glossary technical support has been also included as annex of the paper. Technical vocabulary in Spanish and English is fundamental for the correct development of ETO tasks. Familiarization with technical expressions in Spanish and English is also one of the goals of WNA initiative. This is a work with educational purpose by means of the above-mentioned WNA initiative, intended to explain and to value the fundamental use of Power Electronics in the Professional Marine World.
