Abstract: Nowadays, there is an important lack of safety at secondary roads located on mountain passes. Every winter, there are quite news about accidents at these locations, even some people lose  their lives, due to the unfavourable conditions of the roads due to the snow and the ice. Furthermore, the access to the power grid is normally very difficult, what reduces more the possibility of installing any security measure. In this paper, we propose a technological solution capable of reducing these terrible consequences: a system based on renewable energy to provide information about the state of these secondary roads to the people who drive along these mountain passes. The state of the road matches with the colours of a traffic light, which symbolizes the quality to drive through it. It also has a crossing barrier which close the road if there is too much snow to drive safely. The aim of this project is to design an auto-sufficient system powered by PV panels and a wind turbine, with a battery bank to storage the surplus energy generated. A short description of the different power modules involved in the process , are given in this document and a detailed explanation of the PV panels' module and the battery bank's module, with all the descriptions, equations used, calculations, control algorithms and the different estimations and decisions carried out.
